Srinagar police Tuesday said that a case against 3 employees from Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has been registered for ‘assaulting’ traffic cops and breaking a traffic booth.
Police in a tweet said that: “An incident has come to notice wherein one SMC employee aggrieved by challan on not having HSRP, came back and broke a traffic booth with others, later assaulted traffic personnel on duty. In this regard, FIR has been registered in Shergari PS against 3 delinquent SMC employees.”
Earlier, a video had gone viral in which SMC employees can be seen demolishing a traffic booth near Tagore Hall Srinagar. There was an argument between traffic cops present there and SMC employees. SMC employees claimed that they have directions from the top to demolish the booth while the traffic cops on duty said that SMC was supposed to serve a notice to them so that they could have removed the clothes and other stuff from the booth before demolishing it.
An employee from SMC said on condition of anonymity that they bundled a traffic cop into their vehicle after he ‘misbehaved’ with Chief Anti-Encroachment Officer SMC, Mudasir Hussain Bandey. “We were intending to take him (traffic cop) to Raj Bagh Police Station, but traffic cops stopped us near Convent School, and seized our vehicles,” he said.
When contacted Chief Anti-Encroachment Officer Mudasir Hussain Bandey said that the booth was demolished on the directions from the ward level. Bandey alleged that SMC employees including him were roughed up by traffic police personnel near Convent School Raj Bagh, a claim refuted by SSP Traffic Srinagar city Muzaffar Shah who said it (the allegation) is not true.
Commissioner SMC, Athar Aamir Khan told news agency Kashmir News Trust that both departments (SMC & Traffic) work for the public. “I was in a meeting and I will have to check the details. I will talk to SSP Traffic and Joint Commissioner and let us see what is to be done.” (KNT)
