Former Chief Minister and National Conference leader Omar Abdullah Monday said that the reluctance on part of the government to press the Supreme Court to go for hearings on petitions challenging the abrogation of the special status of Jammu and Kashmir makes it clear that the government doesn’t have a leg to stand on and he is even more hopeful now that the case of petitioners challenging government decision is very strong.

Omar Abdullah was responding to a question during his press conference about the delay in hearing with regard to the petitions challenging the abrogation of Article 370.

Omar Abdullah as per the news agency Kashmir News Trust said that the current Chief Justice of the Supreme Court has assured them that he will make sure that the hearings begin in this matter.

“So long as the issue is alive in the Supreme Court, I will always be hopeful. In fact, if anything, the delay makes me even more hopeful. I will tell why, because I truly believe that if the government was confident in its defense, it would have pressed the Supreme Court for an early hearing as they do in numerous other matters. The fact that the government has shown such amazing reluctance to get into this discussion in the Supreme Court shows that they at least privately understand that they don’t have a leg to stand on. So one day, if not today then tomorrow the Supreme Court will have to hear this case,” Omar Abdullah said.

He added: “We have an assurance from the Current Chief Justice who still has some time left in his tenure that he will make sure that the hearings begin in this matter. I believe that the delay is an indicator of the fact that we have a strong case in the Supreme Court and I am even more hopeful now than perhaps I was in the beginning,” Omar Abdullah concluded.
