Protest: Valley’s biggest Library fails to provide a conducive study environment to students

Kashmir News Trust

Scores of students from various districts Monday staged a protest in the premises of SPS Library Srinagar alleging that authorities are disinterested in resolving the problems they face on daily basis in the library.

The protesting students told news agency Kashmir News Trust that they don’t have internet access inside the library which is one of the biggest public libraries in the Valley. Washrooms are unhygienic, besides there is no canteen facility for them. They said the reading room space is not enough and in this scorching heat, there is no AC installed in the ‘mega’ library.

“Authorities don’t offer any internet facility to the students inside the library. That is OK but the irony is that our own mobile internet doesn’t work inside the library. This is the source of frustration for the students,” they said.

“We don’t have any canteen facilities. We have to take lunch outside the library,” they said adding that toilets are unhygienic and nothing is being done to clean them.

One of the civil service aspirants said that they face a lot of inconvenience in this scorching heat. “There is no cooling system in the reading rooms which are always jam-packed. The atmosphere inside the library is chocking and not conducive for study. A peaceful reading room is every student’s basic necessity. The congested rooms with no internet and cooling facilities mostly fail to provide a conducive study environment,” she said.

The protesting students said that they brought these issues to the notice of authorities, but nothing was done to resolve them.

“We will continue our protest until our problems are resolved,” they said. (KNT)
