7 years and counting: After spending millions, Sonmarg Development Authority doesn’t throw ‘park’ open to visitors

Sonmarg, May 23, KNT: After spending millions to develop a public park for the visitors 7 years ago, that park lying in the middle of the Nallah Sindh at tourist resort here in Sonmarg has not been thrown open by Sonmarg Development Authority.

The park is now in dilapidated condition while the lights installed by the SDA have either been stolen or have become defunct.

In order to get respite from the heat, people across India have been flocking to Kashmir. Sonmarg is one of the favourite destinations of the tourists, however, the park that was developed with the sole intention to attract the attention of the tourists has been left unattended by the Sonmarg Development Authority even after spending millions on it.

“This park has been ignored by SDA for last 7 years. We had thought SDA will leave it open for visitors soon after its completion, but it let it rot, rather than throwing open,” a local shopkeeper told news agency Kashmir News Trust.

Besides the park, the Fisheries Department had created a ‘Fishing Point’ in Sonmarg that was a source of revenue for the Department. However, from the past three years, neither any employee remains posted at the ‘Fishing Point’ nor being it is taken care of. Visitors who use to enjoy fishing at ‘Fishing Point’ have now stopped visiting the said ‘point’ due to the sheer negligence of authorities. (KNT)
