 ‘Unscheduled’ visit of Srinagar Mayor to Rainawari leaves Security Guard injured 

 “It was an unscheduled visit as Mayor had not informed police about it. When I came to know about the presence of Mayor, I led a police party and accompanied him. He safely returned. Since there were other high-profile guests attending the marriage, I rushed there to ensure their safety and security,” he said.

SRINAGAR: Security Guard of Srinagar Mayor sustained injuries after unknown persons stoned vehicles of Junaid Azam Matuu in Rainawari area of Srinagar city.

Mayor was in the area to attend a marriage function.
Sources told news agency Kashmir News Trust that Srinagar Mayor Junaid Azam Matuu visited interiors of Rainawari to attend a marriage function. As the concerned police station came to know about the presence of Mayor, a police party led by Station House Officer accompanied him to the destination. The Mayor attended the function while on way to Saida Kadal area, with the departure of police party Mayor decided to visit interiors of Rainawari.

Eyewitnesses said that near Goripora area unknown persons pelted stones on the vehicles of Srinagar Mayor. One stone according to eyewitnesses hit the eyebrow of the security guard of the Mayor who was shifted to hospital for treatment.

Hospital sources identified the injured security guard as Parvez Ahmed (427/s). “He has suffered injury to left eyebrow and is stable,” said one of the medicos.

Efforts to contact Mayor didn’t materialize, however, Station House Officer, Police Station Rainawari, Rakesh Pandita told KNT that it was an unscheduled visit and still police party ensured his safety and accompanied him to the destination.

Since there were other high-profile guests attending the marriage, I rushed there to ensure their safety and security,” he said.

The police officer said that after reaching Saida Kadal Mayor yet again without informing the police decided to visit interior areas. “There is always threat of militancy and it was obligatory for the Mayor to inform police before his visit to these areas,” he said.

He said that an FIR has been registered and efforts are on to nab the stone-pelters. (KNT)
