GOI wants to obfuscate truth & brush tragedies under the rug: Mehbooba Mufti

“The government encourages young boys to give up militancy on the one hand, while on the other hand, those who respond to calls for peace are harassed

SRINAGAR: Mehbooba Mufti, the former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and the President of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), stated on Wednesday that the LG-led administration in Jammu and Kashmir is exacerbating people’s misery by harassing them in many ways in the name of “security.”

On the pretext of security and COVID-19, she continued, the government were barring her from “reaching out to the people in distress.”

Mehbooba accused the Indian government of obfuscating the truth and sweeping tragedies under the rug (she was pointing to a recent suicide by a young man in Kulgam district in southern Kashmir).

“In J&K besides security COVID has become another excuse to prevent me from reaching out to people in distress. GOI wants to obfuscate the truth & brush such tragedies under the rug,” she posted on her Twitter handle with her video statement.

The former CM stated that she intended to visit the family of a Kulgam youth who recently committed suicide as a result of the government’s failure to pay his father’s salary, but that she was denied permission by the authorities.

Mehbooba Mufti said that the government ensures that LG Manoj Sinha’s visits are not hampered by security issues or the Covid situation, but that she is only offered excuses when she tries to visit the people in distress. “They don’t visit to condole such families, and won’t even allow me,” she lamented.

She said that the family in Kulgam’s Noorabad neighbourhood was helpless since the government had stopped paying their lone breadwinner’s salary for the last two-and-a-half years. “The teacher’s pay was withheld since he had previously been a militant who had since rejected that route. His helplessness drove his son to take such extreme act as suicide,” Mehbooba explained.

This, she claims, is not an isolated incident; many other government employees are being harassed under the guise of “security.”

She further contended, “The government encourages young boys to give up militancy on the one hand, while on the other hand, those who respond to calls for peace are harassed.” (KNT)
