Kashmiri Woman Alleges False Narrative Behind Husband’s Arrest by Delhi Police

Srinagar, March 23, KNT: — In a startling revelation, Aktar-u-Nisa, the wife of alleged Kashmiri militant Liyaqat Ali Shah, has claimed that she and her husband were brought to Delhi in a security vehicle after crossing the Nepal border. She asserted that upon crossing into India, an Indian security vehicle was waiting for them, and they were escorted to Gorakhpur, where Liyaqat was separated from her and detained by the Delhi Police Special Cell.

Aktar-u-Nisa, speaking to the news agency Kashmir News Trust (KNT) from her home in Dardpora, Kupwara, said, “We crossed the Nepal border, and an Indian security vehicle was waiting for us. We boarded that vehicle and traveled to Gorakhpur. There, my husband was asked to disembark and accompany the officers. I was left shocked when I learned that the Delhi Police had spun a completely different narrative around this situation.”

She further accused the Delhi Police of orchestrating a “drama” to mislead the nation. “They tried to create the false impression that Kashmiri youth were planning an attack around Holi, tarnishing the image of the Kashmiris,” she said. “I can say with confidence that we were not carrying any arms or ammunition. We even shared a meal with the security personnel before my husband was taken away. This entire episode seems to have been twisted by the authorities.”

Aktar-u-Nisa also revealed that her husband, Liyaqat, had intended to return to Kashmir and surrender to the authorities. She explained that Liyaqat’s first wife, Amina Banoo, had submitted a form in 2011 under the Rehabilitation Policy, seeking his return to the region. According to police sources, Amina had filed the application for Liyaqat’s surrender at the Kupwara police station on February 5, 2011.

Lamenting her situation, Aktar-u-Nisa expressed her despair, stating, “Living in Kashmir is extremely difficult. It feels like being a Kashmiri is a sin, and I regret my decision to accompany my husband.”

Upon her return to Kashmir, Aktar-u-Nisa and their 20-year-old daughter reported their arrival to the local Police Station in Kralapora, as required.

The dramatic account of the couple’s journey from Nepal to Delhi and the subsequent police action has raised questions about the narrative surrounding Liyaqat Ali Shah, with authorities and the public awaiting further clarification. [KNT]
